Haworth Church, the world premiere!

Haworth Parish Church is set to join the world premiere circuit!

Birmingham-based choir Via Nova will be in Haworth Church to stage the first-ever world performance of choral works inspired by the village’s famous literary family, the Brontës, and the county’s coal heritage on Wednesday, August 16th.

Viva Nova will be undertaking a four-day tour of Yorkshire when they will sing at Haworth Parish Church, the National Coal Mining Museum in Middletown near Wakefield and Wakefield Cathedral.

Their four-concert series starts at Haworth Parish Church and their offering includes the first-ever public staging of new choral works that have been inspired by the Brontë legend and Yorkshire’s contribution to the nation’s coal-mining legacy as well as a UK premiere of a choral piece composed by organist Philip Moore, the former organist and Master of Music at York Minster.

Via Nova is a choir that is very much linked to Birmingham’s tradition of encouraging experimental and innovative arts. They have a strong commitment living composers and have a special focus on artists who come from or work in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Haworth Parish Church has become a popular concert venue having hosted choirs from the East Midlands and North Wales in recent years as well as many of the choirs from the Aire and Worth Valleys.

Via Nova’s decision to bring their Bronte-inspired works to Haworth comes during the 200th anniversary year of Branwell Brontë’s birth and see them performing in the same building in which most of the Bronte family are interred and next door to the family’s home, now the Parsonage Museum.

The concert will last for an hour and a quarter and admission will be free with a retiring collection being taken to help cover the choir’s tour costs as well as the Church’s costs.

The concerted is being hosted by the Church’s support group, the Friends of the Brontës’ Church.

A spokesperson for the choir said: “We’re very much looking forward to visiting Haworth Parish Church and it’s exciting to be performing in a building and village with such well known literary heritage.”

Peter Breed, Chairman of the Friends of the Brontës’ Church, said: “We’re delighted to host Via Nova. We stage concerts and other events so that we can provide financial help to the Church and encourage interest in the building.”

The concert starts at 7.30pm: refreshments will be available and we shall be making a retiring collection to aid with both the concert costs and to boost the Church Restoration Fund.
